We define taking accountability as “a personal choice to rise above one’s circumstances and demonstrate the ownership necessary for achieving desired results; to See It, Own It, Solve It, and Do It.” That’s right, it’s a personal choice to See It. Once you See It, you’re faced with another choice of whether to Own It. Not surprisingly, many people See problems, issues, impending trouble, opportunities, solutions, and emerging trends, but choose not to Own them. So, when disaster strikes or trends explode, they complain, blame their circumstances, or wish they’d taken accountability. If you Own It, you get to make another choice. Will you Solve It? And keep solving it until you achieve your desired result, which, of course, takes you to the final choice: Do It!

Thirty-five years ago, John Mackey and Rene Lawson Hardy borrowed money from family and friends to open a natural foods shop. Determined to provide natural food alternatives to customers while making their new business a success, John and Rene opened a second store two years later. In less than 5 years, their second store had become the largest food market in Austin, Texas. From there they expanded to Houston and Dallas. Today, the company is known as Whole Foods Market, with over $10 billion in sales, more than 50,000 employees, and hundreds of stores throughout the U.S., Canada and the U. K. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently named Whole Foods to its list of Top 25 Green Power Partners. It all started with two people making a personal choice to take accountability for desired results.
