Is everyone on your team aligned, working together to make sure that the team’s culture is accelerating, not hindering, progress? Is everyone on your team accountable and operating Above The Line? Is everyone on your team committed to your team’s common purpose, actively engaged in delivering the desired results? If not, do you know what you can do about it?

Here’s what one team leader did about it. After experiencing an “ah hah” moment with The Results Pyramid in one of our Accountability Training workshops, this middle-management team leader realized that some of her team members held beliefs that were hindering the team’s performance and progress. A few days after the workshop she called a team meeting to identify collectively-held beliefs that might be slowing down or hindering the team’s ability to deliver the needed results. Four beliefs—relating to candid communication, risk-taking, teamwork, and coordination with other teams—were identified as serious hindrances to the team’s success. The discussion that followed focused on how to change the hindering beliefs by creating new team experiences for each other in the areas of communication, risk-taking, teamwork, and coordination with other teams. By the end of the meeting, each team member was demonstrating personal accountability for shifting the hindering beliefs. It was exactly what the team leader had wanted to accomplish. Three months later, the team’s culture had been transformed by team members who were demonstrating shared beliefs that were accelerating, not hindering, the team’s achievement of the desired results.

Team leaders and team members create experiences for each other on a daily basis. Those experiences foster beliefs that lead to actions that produce results. If you want to strengthen your team’s culture, make sure your team’s experiences, beliefs, and actions are aligned to deliver the needed results. It’s just that simple. You can start strengthening your team’s culture today by identifying the collectively-held beliefs that hinder performance and results.
